The passing of famous rapper Riky Rick is a huge loss to the African continent. He took the hip hop culture in African music to a level that few have reached. Known as someone who always wanted to do more, Ricks didn’t just stay in one genre. He built a following across genres and even recorded Amapiano songs.
Real name Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado, Rick was known for a lot more things than just music and rap verses. He had great dress intuition and business acumen that made him stand out in the game.
A true musical innovator, Rick’scareer was filled with trailblazing singles and club bangers. He shaped street culture like no other.
Bursting onto the scene with “Amantombazana,” a track he dropped with OkMalumeKoolKat. The song has so far become a highly successful song, putting South African rap on the map in the process.
In 2015, the legend released his hit song “Boss Zonke” which had everyone singing. The subsequent year, “Sidlukhotini” was released. The industry was in no doubt who the king was at the time. “Sidlukhotini” became an anthem and helped to secure Rick place as a leading figure in the SA rap game. The song exhibited every great thing you can possibly think of when Ricks comes to mind – stand-out verses, uniqueness, name it.
Interestingly, Riky would remain one of those legends who never really dropped an album. The rapper, however, dropped an EP in 2017 which he titled “Stay Shining.” The EP contains some of the popular songs in SA hip hop. He also featured some of the most respected rappers in the game including Cassper Nyovest, Major League, Professor and Alie Keyz.
Riky was particularly known for doing the most on verses. He was one of those that rare breed who didn’t bother about pushing out music for its sake. His unforgettable vocals and verse on Major League DJz song “Zulu Girls” remains unmatched.
The legend expressed his versatility on Big Zulu’s viral hit song “Imali,” telling the world that he isn’t just a rapper. Further, he released his 2020 Amapiano banger “Ungazincishi” featuring Tyler ICU and Focalistic.
